In a word, Andrew Garfield’s s*xuality is confusing. Right now, ‘Andrew Garfield gay’ and ‘Andrew Garfield bisexual’ are breakout search terms on Google.
Now, this is not a case of a male celebrity opening up about his sexuality and thus leading many to question or even dream that he is not entirely straight.
“I have an openness to any impulses that may arise within me at any time.”
Although he was quick to clarify his statement: “If I were to identify, I would identify as heterosexual.”
This is not the first time Garfield has talked about his sexuality. In an interview with OUT magazine, he explained that while he views sexuality as very fluid, he identifies as heterosexual.
‘My stance toward life, though, is that I always try to surrender to the mystery of not being in charge,’ Garfield said.
The character was a gay guy with AIDS, and he won a Tony Award for the portrayal in 2018.
Garfield is Passionate About Acting
Andrew Russell Garfield, better known as Andrew Garfield, was born in Los Angeles, California on August 20, 1983. And its perhaps why Andrew Garfield is the centre of rather ludicrous debate today – because he has, in fact, been pictured having sun cream rubbed into him by a male friend.
Of course, for legal reasons we should note here, we’re being sarcastic – this picture does not say anything about Andrew Garfield’s sexuality, but the reaction online certainly proves that many would deem it so. The actor and his companion are pictured shirtless onboard a yacht in Positano, Italy.
“Whoever leaked that photo knew exactly what they were doing,” a Reddit user commented.
A Gay Without The Physical Act
When promoting the critically acclaimed London National Theatre production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America in 2017, Garfield drew criticism for saying that watching RuPaul’s Drag Race was his “life outside of the play” and that he was “a gay man right now just without the physical act – that’s all.”
“As far as I know, I am not a gay man,” he continued.
In fact, Andrew has been outright asked about his sexuality in interviews before, after playing a gay man living with Aids in the National Theatre’s current production of Angels in America. The actor has previously played a variety of LGBTQ roles, including Prior Walter in the AIDS-era play Angels in America and a transgender lady in the Arcade Fire music video for “We Exist.”
He has also been a steadfast ally of the LGBTQ community; in fact, he gave his 2018 Tony Award to the group and came out in favor of increased LGBTQ representation in superhero movies like The Amazing Spider-Man.
But identifying as a member of the LGBTQ community and being a straight ally are two distinct things.
“My stance toward life, though, is that I always try to surrender to the mystery of not being in charge,” he said. ‘I have an openness to any impulses that may arise within me at any time. So which group does Garfield belong to?
Andrew Garfield: Did He Come Out As Gay?
While Garfield does not currently identify as gay, he told OUT magazine in 2018 that he is open to the possibility of his s*xuality being flexible.
He stated, “My stance toward life, though, is that I always try to surrender to the mystery of not being in charge.
They would rather burn, in record European temperatures no less, than ask another man to put sun cream on them.
But seriously, it’s a real thing with the men, the old sun cream saga. The actor has played LGBT characters in theater works, and his superb performances have earned him accolades.
He played Prior Walter in the play Angels in America at the National Theatre in London in 2017.
Because, dear men, being afraid to have another man rub sun scream on you for fear of being gay is homophobic. In a 2017 Q&A panel, the actor said “I am a gay man right now, pretty much, just without the physical act,” after which he faced public backlash.
The actor’s comments came while he was promoting his new starring role in a new Broadway production of Angels in America, a metaphorical examination of queerness and AIDS in the 1980s.
