On first sip, I tasted toffee, burnt caramel, and a hint of banana. There is no added sugar, it has a natural sweetness to it. My husband and I tried some neat and compared to some other rums we've had, found it a bit harsh. Technically, the Distillery is independent, but Rémy Cointreau is a majority shareholder of the facility and controls the Mount Gay brand — and they do a very good job leaving them alone to create their brand of Caribbean magic.
Mount Gay XO has been around for a while… but then again it is brand new.
It’s worth the money. The taste is smooth and perfect in a mixed drink. No wonder it’s been around for 300 years, it’s better.
