Now I’m receiving ads telling me to find the dinosaur that best suits me. Without direct evidence, any claims about dinosaur sexuality would be speculative and based on assumptions. It’s dangerous that we are talking about gay dinosaurs.

The primary reason for this caution is the lack of direct evidence regarding the specific sexual behaviors and orientations of dinosaurs.

Perhaps we shouldn’t try to turn the dinosaurs gay?

Welcome to Dino Ranch

Saddle up and join Jon, Min, and Miguel at the Dino Ranch! However, it is also Pride month, and while exploring YouTube, I found a clip of a kids’ television series “Dino Ranch” from Disney+.

Some have found a recent Muppet Babies episode in which Gonzo cross-dresses to be problematic… others have taken issue with some of the messaging out of a show called The Proud Family. Jon rides Blitz,a velociraptor - one of the fastest, most unpredictable dinosaurs of all.

Our dino-doctor in training, 8 year-old Minloves animals - espically dinosaurs.

Attempting to apply modern human understandings of sexuality to creatures that lived millions of years ago would be anachronistic and potentially misleading. Watson’s Chickens, that might make delightful, one-off shows. The episode resolves when the ranchers find them a completely abandoned egg.

For parents that would like to review the content, Adoptasaurs Rex is part of Season 1 Episode 24 of Dino Ranch on Disney+ and is available in the Kids Only section.

The show isn’t new in terms of its debut — but it is relatively new for Disney+.

Instead, they are inferred based on fossil evidence and comparisons with modern animals. The episode “Adoptasaurus Rex” features a pair of male dinosaurs that are seen lurking around nests, attempting to take dinosaur eggs from other dinosaur families.

But where are there still gaps, and where can we look for new ideas?

The “plethora of excellent kids and family programming” includes Disney shows The Ghost and Molly McGee, which includes a queer ghost and a woman teacher with a wife; Eureka! which features a nonbinary classmate of the protagonist; Dino Ranch, with an episode centered on a male dinosaur couple adopting an egg, and Firebuds, which has two characters with same-sex parents (two moms and two dads, respectively).

Honestly, I never thought we would ever connect prehistoric creatures with a sexual orientation before. Instead, we should rely on the available scientific evidence, such as fossil records, to make informed conclusions about their biology, behavior, and ecological roles. It’s home to the tight-knit Cassidy family; Jon and the speedy velociraptor Blitz, Min and Clover, the gentle, loveable Brontosaurus, or Miguel and Tango, a mighty triceratops.

Yeehaw!

The clip depicted two male T-Rexes showing affection to one another while incubating rocks (that they were pretending to be eggs) in a nest. The show is acquired content, but the premier dates on both networks are so close together (literally days apart) that it’s possible Disney had some involvement in production.

The animated series stars are a multi-racial adopted family in some kind of pre-historic environment with some amount of modern technology present.

For the younger tots, there’s Princess Power, which includes a princess with two dads (about which more here), and Ridley Jones, which includes a nonbinary character and a girl with two dads, but has unfortunately just been cancelled.

Because of the rise in quality, LGBTQ-inclusive programming, GLAAD has split its GLAAD Media Awards Kids & Family Programming category to include both Live Action and Animated categories, and you can see from the list of nominees that even more shows have recently included LGBTQ representation.

And why not take some of the great kids’ biographies of LGBTQ people, or the collective biographies by Sarah Prager, and create a series for Pride and/or LGBTQ History Month?

Not that every book needs a show, or vice versa—but some of the most beloved children’s media franchises cross these boundaries and allow kids to engage with their beloved characters in multiple ways.

Nickelodeon’s The Loud House includes a two-man married couple.

Also for the slightly older kids was Netflix’s Dead End: Paranormal Park, which has also just ended, and starred a gay trans boy, along with his love interest and his pansexual coworker.
