They think of themselves as being oppressed underdogs, and in real life they're very real competition with lions in the food chain. yeah... or pompous Jerkass who threw his weight around to bully his little brother, was letting a bunch of hyenas starve for no reason, and who was raising his son to be as big a douche as he was? The documentary Mickey Mouse Monopoly pointed this out.
Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed - friends, or family?
If there are two males, one dominates. It should be notable that, even in the film's final version, she seemingly smiles while falling, so suicide is a likely possibility. Timon and Pumbaa are outcasts who find solace in each other’s company. Scar clings to this lie almost to the bitter end, until his hubris gets the better of him and he tells the truth to Simba, only for the young lion to finally find his inner strength and defeat his uncle, leading to the latter’s being devoured by his former hyena allies.
In preparation for this piece I decided to rewatch the 2019 live-action film, in the hopes that I might be able to uncover some residue of the queer malice that made the original character such an inspiration (if I can dare to use that word) for me as a young queer kid constantly existing on the outskirts of heterosexual society.
And if only he would've done [that], the world would've been entirely different. The other animals fear the lions especially when you consider that the movie makes no effort in disguising the fact that the lions hunt other animals and they all fled after Scar became king (and the pride lands became a wasteland but that's beside the point).
The Lion King: Six New Adventures
The Lion King
There are Ambiguously Gay / Depraved Homosexual elements to Scar's performance.
Unfortunately, the movie was banned in several countries or censored. This is ironic since a deleted scene (which was re-added for the musical) shows Scar choosing a grown up Nala as his mate and seeming rather disturbingly excited about making "little Scars" with her.
During Disney’s Michael Eisner era, any animated movie that broke the box office received additional flicks for the home video market and sometimes even a television series. This raises the question of what caused Scar to appeal to the Lion Guard for help in deposing Mufasa. It’s also that he lacks the bite that made this swishy lion with the dark mane and the limp wrist–er, paw–so fascinating and fun and, more to the point, troubling to watch.
Updated on March 20, 2024, by Andrea Sandoval: Disney doesn't offer the most inclusive media available, but for many, these animation films are a cultural staple. The Broadway play seems to play this up to extreme levels. Not only that, but Priya also has a crush on one of the boys from the band, which might suggest she's bisexual, a sexual orientation often ignored in the media.
He’s tired of his meerkat species living in the clos– er, I mean, underground and at the bottom of the food chain, in fear of hyenas. At least, it taught me the definition of a 4th wall break. Obviously camp means different things to different people, but it is fundamentally about artifice and subversion and, when it comes to gender and queerness, it’s about pointing out how the supposedly fixed nature of such things is itself a fiction.
That’s queer culture!
As Disney still stumbles through their “exclusively gay moments,” The Lion King 1 ½ is a reminder that sometimes subtext is better — especially when it’s this texty. As these queer villains show, very often it’s sweetly good to be bitterly bad.
There are many sins that can be laid at the feet of the live-action remakes that Disney seems intent on forcing upon us every year, but arguably the worst, in my mind at least, is the systematic de-queering of so many of the classic villains.
Thanks to Mufasa being a good father and decent king despite this hatred of hyenas.
