The Importance of Safe Spaces for LGBTQ+ Motorcyclists
Motorcycling is often celebrated as a liberating and exhilarating hobby, but for many in the LGBTQ+ community, it can also be a source of anxiety and isolation.
Despite this progress, the club was formed in an era marked by societal stigma and the devastating AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s. St. Pete Pride also deserves mention because the parade often features motorcycle riders. Typically, LGBTQ riders come from near and far to join in on the festivities. It’s an event that’s increasing in popularity and allows you to explore some of the very scenic motorcycle routes in Florida.
The Joy Ride (formerly know as Smart Ride)
This ride is for bicyclists, but it doesn’t mean you can’t participate.
The club’s members often travel significant distances to participate in events, reinforcing the idea that social interaction is vital in combating isolation.
Sean McAllister, a newer member, shares how joining the GBMCC eased his entry into the world of motorcycling. Many gay individuals remained closeted, and organizations like the GBMCC became essential for fostering connections and providing a sense of belonging.

Who are the Border Riders?
Founded in 1969, the Border Riders Motorcycle Club is one of the oldest and largest gay motorcycle clubs in North America.
We welcome all legally licensed and insured motorcyclists who wish to participate in our events, regardless of their riding experience or the make and model of their motorcycle. All motorcycles must be capable of freeway speeds and be in good running condition. Either way, you’ll want to bring your motorcycle.
In June, you have the Key West Pride.
We hope that nobody experiences discrimination or homophobia while visiting Florida and beyond, but we make no guarantees. It’s still a large event and attracts all types of motorcycle riders, including LGBTQ bikers. Kevin Bazeley, the club’s chair, emphasizes the significance of this community: “It’s about enjoying the hobby we love but in an environment where we’re totally safe to be who we are.”
Understanding the Historical Context
The GBMCC emerged during a pivotal time in British history, just a decade after the Sexual Offences Act 1967 began to decriminalize homosexual acts in England and Wales.
Registration is required for the weekend rides and campouts, and you can find the schedule on our website's "Runs & Events" section.
On behalf of the Border Riders Motorcycle Club, we thank you for your interest and invite you to ride with us and to explore the club and the great area we are lucky enough to call home. In the most gay-friendly areas, like St.
Pete and Fort Lauderdale, you can find large clubs with frequent events.
One notable group is the Stonewall Knights. “This is a place where I feel like I fit in,” he states, underscoring the club’s role in fostering connections and providing a sense of purpose.
Looking Ahead: The Future of the GBMCC
As the GBMCC navigates the complexities of modern society, it remains committed to its mission of inclusivity and support.
The club is also a prominent presence at Pride events, showcasing its commitment to visibility and representation within the broader LGBTQ+ community. With over 500 members spanning all four UK nations and beyond, the GBMCC fosters a diverse and inclusive environment that welcomes straight allies as well.
However, the club faces challenges in attracting younger members.
The GBMCC offers a unique opportunity to escape societal pressures and embrace one’s identity while sharing a love for motorcycles.
Exploring the Benefits of Membership
Joining the GBMCC opens up a world of riding opportunities, from local excursions to weekend getaways across the UK and even summer camps in Europe.
The Fort Lauderdale chapter meets almost every week for breakfast and then goes for a ride.
Another group worth mentioning is the Skulls Dogs RC. Although this group isn’t nearly as large as the Stonewall Knights, it’s a tight-knit community of LGBTQ women who love to ride. It takes place in Daytona and usually attracts around 100,000 people.
